DEM (Discrete Element Analysis)

Discrete Element Method is a technique used for the simulation and analysis of particle flow situations providing information on particle kinematics, momentum, heat and mass transfer.

For the Abbot Point Bucket Wheel Reclaimer project Haald has used EDEM discrete element particle analysis software to model the flow of material through the Reclaim components with the aim of optimising the chute design.
Simulations to optimise geometry were carried out with the bucket wheel operating in the horizontal position:

Analysis output shows the flow path of arbitrarily selected particles. Other particles are disrupted by these and detach from the face. General belt loading is not particularly even and material spray can often be observed.
DEM simulations with the improved performance
Analysis output again of arbitrary particles, shows the final layout gives fast moving product down the slope face, without compromising load distribution.

Result
Based on the outcomes of analysis carried out in EDEM the geometry has been optimised within the constraints of allowable and practical modifications.

In addition to improved flow behaviour the redesign has allowed the incorporation of several useful qualities - such as the adjustable deflector, which can be configured both manually and by the linear actuator.
The design is suitable and functional in both stack and reclaim operations, and is generally

optimised for the reclaim scenario

The discrete element method (DEM) is a promising approach to model machine–granular
material interaction. The accuracy of DEM models depends on the model parameters. In this
study a calibration process is developed to determine the parameter values. Laboratory shear
tests and compressions tests are used to determine the material internal friction angle and
stiffness, respectively. These tests are repeated numerically usingDEMmodels with different
sets of particle friction coefficients and particle stiffness values. The shear test results are
found to be dependent on both the particle friction coefficient and the particle stiffness.
The compression test results show that it is only dependent on the particle stiffness. The
combination of shear test and compression test results can be used to determine a unique
set of particle friction and particle stiffness values. The calibration process is validated by
modelling silo discharge and bucket filling. It is shown that DEM can accurately predict the
silo discharge rate and flow patterns. It is also shown that DEM can predict bucket forces,
fill rates and fill patterns.
